Make a Creative Resolution in 2010

creative
This January brings not just a new year, but a new decade — providing the perfect chance to make worthwhile resolutions. In celebration of the mathematical beauty of the New Year (20/10 = 2), we offer the two biggest resolutions you can make to earn the biggest creative dividends in 20/10.

1. Resolve to keep your advertisements consistent. The number one reason for advertising is to drive consumers to your store. Making your ads easily identifiable as belonging to you helps in this quest.  If a consumer can see your ad, even briefly, and recognize your brand, then part of the battle has been won. The only way consumers can link your store to an advertisement quickly is if your ads maintain a consistent look. Keep these thoughts in mind: Do you use your logo consistently? Do you have a brand color that you use? Do you have a consistent typeface? Do you have thematic ads?

2. Resolve to plan ad buys based on the message. It sounds simple enough, but the fact is, often someone purchases an ad of a certain size, thinking they have a simple message. Before you know it, the ad is crammed with a ton of information, rendering it virtually useless, because the intent of the ad (if even noticed by a consumer) is lost in the amount of information. If you can only afford a small ad, keep the message simple and leave room for an image and keep your logo a reasonable size. If you have a complicated message, consider shelling out the money for a larger ad. And to avoid having to spend extra at the last minute, plan for complicated offers ahead of time by buying a larger ad.

Head into 2010 with these thoughts in mind as you plan your creative for the year. If you’re spending your advertising money wisely and keeping your face in front of consumers, show them the same face each time, whether selling diamonds, watches or giftware. On the front end, budget accordingly so that you can afford larger ads for more complicated messages.
