Quick Tips to Managing Social Networking (Or Not)

08.socialnetworkingSocial networking is the hot button marketing trick. But it does come with its own set of pitfalls. Following are some thoughts to keep in mind when — or if — you begin that social networking foray for your business.

1. Is it right for you? For your business? Many jewelry lines carry quite a following on social networking sites, but passion is the key! If you aren’t passionate about keeping posts current and consistently updating, delegate the responsibility to a trusted employee. Not all CEOs have to blog, tweet, etc. Find the right person to carry the social networking flag — you’ll see results. And make sure you follow this rule: 1) Web Strategy, 2) Internet Marketing Strategy and 3) Social Networking Strategy … this is the order of importance and creation. If you don’t have an above-average Web site that’s being promoted by a solid Internet marketing strategy, don’t waste your time on social networks.

2. Not all content has to be original. Follow the 60/40 rule. 60% of content should be educational (and you don’t have to be the author) and the other 40% of content can be promotional (but still must be valuable!). Keep in mind … your customers know less about jewelry than you do. What seems mundane to you may be fascinating to them.

3. Use Social Networking as a real-time, and FREE, focus group. This is your opportunity to connect with customers and prospective customers. What jewelry are they wearing? Which star’s jewelry is the hottest? Get their opinions and let their perspective on your business influence future focus — including social networking strategies.

4. Use the powerful search tools. Many social networking platforms have built-in search tools (Twitter’s being a favorite). You can quickly and easily find out what’s being said about any company — including yours.

5. Make it a good habit. Still not sure about your role in the social networking game? Think of it like this … cup of coffee, turn on computer, check email and voicemail, Tweet, etc. Make it a part of your daily ritual and it’ll come easier than you think. And come on, it’s 140 characters. I know you have that much to say!
